Scrumpy

As hinted at in the last month's story, we've currently got a lot of cider underway at Monbulk Winery.

We'll be releasing our first batch of Scrumpy for sale through Monbulk in July, but just in case anyone's wondering - what is Scrumpy!

Scrumpy is a term that can shapeshift a little depending upon the source.  Originally it meant cider that was made from windfall apples (scrumps). For some people that meant a cloudy, unsophisticated cider.

For most people (including us) nowadays it means a young cider, only a few months old, which has yet to undergo the maturation phase (including a malo-lactic fermentation).  It tends to be still - not sparkling, although it can go "fizzy" in the bottle if you leave it too long.

Ideally Scrumpy should be drunk young, as soon as possible after bottling to fill the gap between when it is availabile and when the matured, older cider is ready.
